North American Feed-in Tariffs Big Day: Ontario & Vermont Move

The march toward aggressive renewable energy policy in North America took a long stride Tuesday, May 5th when both Ontario and Vermont moved feed-in tariff legislation toward law.

From one of the continent's largest jurisdictions, Ontario, to one of its smallest, Vermont, the action by the two parliaments demonstrate conclusively that feed-in tariffs are no longer foreign to North America, that their time has come.

By this time next year there could be half-dozen feed-in tariff policies in place in Canada and the US once Hawaii and Wisconsin implement their programs administratively through the regulatory process.

However, it is Ontario, Canada's most populous province, and tiny Vermont that are setting the policy direction. Both have proposed a system of feed-in tariffs based on the cost of generation plus a reasonable profit, the cornerstone of successful European feed-in tariff policies.

Finally, it's springtime for renewable energy in North America.
