Esperance Wind-Diesel System Passes 20-Year Anniversary

Ten Mile Lagoon wind farm on the south coast of West Australia was commissioned 20-years ago. The pioneering wind-diesel system at the remote community of Esperance cost AUS$5.8 million in 1993 to build the 2 MW project. The nine Vestas V27 turbines have run since then.

Ten years ago the project was expanded at a cost of AUS$10.3 million with six more turbines. The Vestas V47 turbines at Nine Mile Beach add 3.6 MW to the system.

Together the turbines produce nearly one-fourth Esperance’s electricity and generate 9.5 million kWh annually.
