Tehachapi Pass Wind Resource Update 2003

Wind turbines in California produce about 1% of the states electricity. The Tehachapi Wind Resource Area accounts for almost half of that. Altogether the turbines in Tehachapi produce enough electricity to power 200,000 typical California homes. Revenues from the sale of wind-generated electricity range from $50 to $75 million per year.

There are currently 3,400 wind turbines operating in the Tehachapi Pass. They range in size from 50 kW to 1,500 kW. Some have been in regular service for 20 years. GE Wind operates an assembly hall in Tehachapi where they currently build 1.5 MW wind turbines for use in the Americas. (GE also operates a plant in Germany that provides turbines for the rest of the world.)
