Mecklenburg-Vorpommern First German State to Produce 100 Percent RE

The former East German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern became the first German state to generate more electricity with renewable energy than its own domestic consumption. In 2013 the state on the Baltic coast generated more than 120% of its electricity with renewable energy, becoming a next exporter largely due to the growth of wind energy. Wind energy generation grew nearly one-third in 2013, increasing from 3.5 TWh in 2012 to 4.7 TWh in 2013. Wind energy accounted for more than half of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s renewable generation of 8.3 TWh in 2013.
