Articles from the Period

Back in 2014 Jim Manwell at the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Wind Energy Center was corresponding with Mike Lawson of the York History Center about the Smith-Putnam wind turbine project of the 1940s.

The S Morgan Smith Company, the Smith of the Smith-Putnam project, was a manufacturer of hydroelectric turbines located in York, Pennsylvania. Consequently, the York History Center has a collection of documents and artifacts including a 1.5”:1’-scale model of the turbine’s drive train that were donated by former employees.

Lawson forwarded two articles about the Smith-Putnam turbine from the period that he had on file. Manwell recently passed them along to me.

One is a 1943 article in the company newsletter. I don’t know the provenance of the other article.
