New Wind Tops ~100,000 MW in 2021 for First Time

The World Wind Energy Association announced that for the first time new wind turbine installations reached nearly 100,000 MW in 2021. The announcement was made on the eve of Global Wind Day and the start of the WWEA conference in Rimini, Italy.

China alone installed more than half the total in 2021, followed by the USA with a modest 12,500 MW of new capacity.

100,000 MW of modern wind turbines are capable of generating from 200 TWh/yr to 300 TWh/yr of electricity. For comparison, the state of California consumes about 300 TWh per year.

California currently gets only 15.6 TWh of its electricity from wind turbines.
